AsianFin -- Chinese autonomous driving startup Pony.ai is planning to deploy a fleet of self-driving taxis in Hong Kong once regulatory hurdles are cleared, signaling the company’s push into new urban markets while downplaying potential competition from Tesla.
Speaking at a media event in Guangzhou on Tuesday, Pony.ai Chief Financial Officer Leo Wang said the company is exploring opportunities in Hong Kong following its successful groundwork in Guangzhou. “We have established a solid foundation in Guangzhou and are now considering Hong Kong,” Wang said. He emphasized that Pony.ai will work closely with local authorities and partners to determine the best path forward.
The move into Hong Kong reflects Pony.ai’s broader strategy to expand its autonomous vehicle operations beyond mainland China, targeting high-density urban areas where demand for ride-hailing and mobility services is strong. The company has already established a reputation as a leading player in the Chinese autonomous driving sector, leveraging partnerships with major automakers and extensive testing programs.
While Tesla has also expressed interest in autonomous driving in the region, Wang suggested that Pony.ai sees regulatory collaboration and local partnerships as key differentiators, rather than direct rivalry. The company plans to prioritize safety, compliance, and integration with existing transport infrastructure as it prepares for large-scale operations.
