Biden Administration Unveils Proposal to Restrict AI Chip Exports

AsianFin -- The Biden administration has introduced a proposal to tighten restrictions on the export of advanced computer chips critical for artificial intelligence development. The move aims to maintain the United States' six- to 18-month lead in AI over competitors like China.

Announced on Monday, the framework has sparked concerns among chip industry leaders, who warn it could limit access to existing gaming chips and restrict data center and AI product chips in 120 countries, including Mexico, Portugal, Israel, and Switzerland.

Chip manufacturer Nvidia criticized the proposal as "misguided," arguing that it could "derail global innovation and economic growth."

Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, speaking during a press briefing, emphasized the importance of safeguarding U.S. leadership in AI and the development of AI-related chips. She noted that the rapidly evolving AI sector has transformative potential, enabling breakthroughs in scientific research, automation, and even reshaping economic and military landscapes.
