AsianFin -- BYD Co. shares soared to a record high after the Chinese automaker introduced a new lineup of electric vehicles (EVs) featuring a revolutionary battery technology that enables charging speeds nearly as fast as refueling a traditional car.
On Tuesday, BYD's stock surged as much as 6% at the opening of trading in Hong Kong, pushing its market valuation to nearly $162 billion. This figure surpasses the combined market capitalization of Ford Motor Co., General Motors Co., and Volkswagen AG.
At a launch event on Monday, BYD Chairman and founder Wang Chuanfu revealed that the company's new battery and charging system can deliver approximately 400 kilometers (249 miles) of range in just five minutes, based on tests conducted on its latest Han L sedan. Vehicles equipped with this cutting-edge technology are set to hit the market next month.
The ability to charge an EV in the time it takes to refuel a conventional combustion engine vehicle could be a game-changer, potentially convincing hesitant drivers to make the switch to electric mobility by eliminating the need for lengthy charging stops.
Analysts at Macquarie Capital, including China autos head Eugene Hsiao, noted in a research report, "We believe this is another sign that BYD is undergoing a strategic shift. Rather than competing on price, vehicle design, or entering new product niches, BYD appears to be leveraging its scale and core EV technologies to differentiate itself in a highly competitive market."
They added, "By directly addressing one of the key hurdles to battery electric vehicle (BEV) adoption—charging speed—the company is offering customers a clearer path to transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to EVs."
