China’s Population Declines for Third Consecutive Year Despite Slight Increase in Births

AsianFin -- China's population continued to decline for the third consecutive year in 2024, despite a slight rise in the number of births, highlighting a persistent long-term challenge for the economy.

According to data released by the National Statistics Bureau on Friday, China’s population decreased by more than 1.39 million, bringing the total to 1.408 billion.

Approximately 9.54 million babies were born, an increase of 520,000 compared to the previous year. This uptick may be partly attributed to the belief that the Year of the Dragon, according to the Chinese zodiac, is an auspicious time to have children. However, the number of births still marked the second-lowest level since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.
