Chinese AI Startup MiniMax Launches New Models

AsianFin -- Chinese AI companies continue to challenge U.S.-based tech giants like OpenAI with innovative model releases. This week, MiniMax, a startup backed by Alibaba and Tencent, unveiled three advanced AI models: MiniMax-Text-01, MiniMax-VL-01, and T2A-01-HD. With $850 million in venture capital funding and a valuation exceeding $2.5 billion, MiniMax is positioning itself as a key player in the global AI landscape.

The new models showcase a range of capabilities. MiniMax-Text-01, a text-focused model with 456 billion parameters, is designed for tasks such as answering complex math and factual queries. MiniMax claims it outperforms Google’s recently released Gemini 2.0 Flash on benchmarks like MMLU and SimpleQA, which measure a model's problem-solving and knowledge-retrieval skills.

MiniMax-VL-01, a multimodal model, can process and understand both text and images. It reportedly rivals Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet on tests like ChartQA, which involve analyzing graphs and diagrams. However, it trails behind models like Google’s Gemini 2.0 Flash, OpenAI’s GPT-4, and the open-source InternVL2.5 on several benchmarks.

The third model, T2A-01-HD, specializes in audio generation, particularly speech synthesis, further broadening MiniMax’s capabilities.

MiniMax’s advancements underline the rapid progress of Chinese AI firms as they develop systems competitive with the best in the industry. These models reflect a growing push to innovate across a variety of AI domains, from language understanding to multimodal and audio processing.
