The group, established under the National Security Council, will include experts from the ministries of defense, interior, transport, the Czech Army, police, and other agencies. Its primary mission is to monitor technological developments related to drones and develop appropriate countermeasures to ensure the safety of Czech citizens.
Prime Minister Fiala emphasized the urgency of responding to the drone threat, stating, "We must respond to the danger posed by Russian drones. Our priority is to ensure the safety of citizens and to be ready for any potential threats. That is why we decided to establish, under the National Security Council, a coordinating group for the protection of the state from drones." He added that this initiative strengthens the country's defense against new threats observed in the region.
The Czech Republic has also been finalizing a tender to purchase several hundred drones of various types, which fits into the broader concept of developing a multi-layer air defense system beyond just counter-drone measures.
In recent weeks, the Czech Republic recorded airspace violations by Russian drones, similar to incidents reported by Poland. In response, the Czech Republic dispatched a helicopter unit equipped with three Mi-171Sh helicopters to the eastern NATO border to bolster security.
These developments coincide with NATO's launch of the "Eastern Guard" operation on September 12, 2025, aimed at neutralizing drone-related threats along the alliance's eastern flank. The operation involves resources from Denmark, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and other member countries, combining traditional military capabilities with specialized UAV countermeasures.
Poland has also taken steps to enhance its defense, including permitting NATO troops to be stationed on its territory as part of the operation. The Czech Republic's coordinating group is expected to deepen cooperation with NATO allies and integrate drone threat responses into a comprehensive national and regional security framework.
