Douyin VP Says Overseas IPs Do Not Represent Overseas Registered Users

AsianFin -- Many Douyin users are currently seeing videos from influencers with IP locations in the United States, United Kingdom, Russia, Thailand, and other countries, leading to speculation that Douyin has opened registration for international users with overseas IPs.

In response, an insider familiar with Douyin told AsianFin that the platform has not yet opened overseas registration. The registration process still requires a Chinese phone number (+86), and the policy has not changed, as Chinese laws and regulations mandate the use of a +86 phone number for registration.

Douyin’s Vice President of Internet Operations, Li Liang, later took to social media to clarify that having an overseas IP does not mean that the user is registered from abroad. He pointed out that many people have taken advantage of this situation by impersonating foreign users and reposting videos, especially some black-market groups.
