AsianFin -- European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde emphasized that the fight against inflation remains a continuous challenge, especially amid uncertainty created by the US administration's trade policies.
In an interview with France Inter Radio on Monday, Lagarde described inflation control as "a daily struggle" and stated, "We are almost where we should be, but we need to maintain that position, which is why I say it’s a constant battle."
Since June, policymakers have implemented six quarter-point interest rate cuts, but there is no clear consensus on what action will be taken at the upcoming ECB meeting on April 17. This uncertainty is partly driven by the planned announcement of reciprocal tariffs by US President Donald Trump on April 2 and the unpredictable global consequences that may follow.
“We are all absolutely determined to reach our target, which is 2% inflation,” Lagarde remarked. "As for how to get there, some favor a swift approach, while others suggest a more cautious pace, waiting to assess the obstacles that may arise along the way."
