EU Reassesses Tech Investigations into Apple, Google, and Meta

AsianFin -- The European Commission is reexamining its investigations into tech giants Apple, Meta, and Google, according to a report by the Financial Times on Tuesday.

The review comes as these companies have called on U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to push back against the European Union’s regulatory scrutiny of their operations.

One source cited by the newspaper noted that while Trump’s election victory was a factor influencing the reassessment, it was not the primary trigger for the review.

The Commission’s reevaluation may result in a narrowing or alteration of the scope of ongoing investigations. This review will include all cases initiated since March 2024 under the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA), sources said.

The DMA, one of the EU’s most robust frameworks for regulating Big Tech, sets strict rules for the largest technology platforms to prevent anti-competitive behavior. It has the authority to impose fines of up to 10% of a company’s global annual revenue for violations.
