AsianFin -- The European Union’s top trade negotiator said Monday that discussions with U.S. officials were “good,” as both sides ramp up efforts to secure a trade deal ahead of a new July 9 deadline.
The update follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to postpone the implementation of a 50% tariff on European imports, initially set to begin on June 1.
EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic said in a post on X that the bloc remains “fully committed” to reaching an agreement and that the European Commission is pushing forward “at pace” in its talks with the U.S.
Sefcovic spoke with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer shortly after Trump extended the tariff deadline, allowing more time for negotiations with the 27-member bloc.
Trump’s move to delay the punitive tariff followed a phone call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who, according to Trump, expressed a strong desire to “get down to serious negotiations.”
