NextFin news, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk traveled to Chisinau, Moldova, on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, to mark Moldova’s 34th Independence Day and demonstrate European support for the country’s sovereignty and democratic path.
The visit, at the invitation of Moldovan President Maia Sandu, comes one month before Moldova’s parliamentary elections scheduled for September 28, 2025. The leaders aimed to send a clear message against Russian attempts to interfere in Moldova’s political process through disinformation, cyberattacks, and financing of disruptive protests, as warned by Moldovan security services.
During their visit, the three European leaders held official statements with President Sandu at the Presidential Palace and addressed citizens at a public concert on Chisinau’s Great National Assembly Square. They also participated in the official independence day celebrations, including speeches and a concert on Independence Square.
The visit underscores support for Moldova’s European Union accession ambitions. Moldova was granted EU candidate status in 2022 and began accession negotiations in June 2024. The European leaders reaffirmed their backing for Moldova’s security, sovereignty, and European trajectory amid ongoing threats from Russia, which opposes Moldova’s EU integration.
President Sandu, a vocal critic of Russia’s destabilization efforts, described the visit as a "show of support" for Moldova in the face of unprecedented election interference. Opinion polls indicate Sandu’s pro-EU Action and Solidarity Party leads with about 39 percent support ahead of the elections, while pro-Russian parties lag behind.
The visit by the so-called Weimar Triangle leaders—France, Germany, and Poland—also serves as a symbolic message to Russia that European countries are closely monitoring the situation in Moldova and stand united in support of its democratic institutions and territorial integrity.
In addition to the European leaders, Romanian President Nicușor Dan is scheduled to visit Chisinau on August 31 for Romanian Language Day, further signaling regional support for Moldova’s European integration efforts.
