NextFin news, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) will vote on two motions of no confidence against European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during the plenary session scheduled from October 6 to 9, 2025, in Strasbourg, France, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola confirmed on Tuesday.
The two motions were submitted last week by two political groups: The Left and the far-right Patriots for Europe. The Left criticizes von der Leyen for perceived inaction regarding Israel's actions in Gaza, while the Patriots oppose her trade agreements with the United States and Mercosur.
Roberta Metsola informed MEPs via email that the motions will be added to the final draft agenda for the October plenary session. This marks the second time this year that von der Leyen must defend her Commission in the European Parliament, having survived a far-right-led censure vote in July with only 175 MEPs supporting the motion.
Parliamentary rules do not clearly specify the procedure for handling two simultaneous motions of censure, making this an unprecedented situation. The European Parliament's Conference of Presidents, the leadership body, will decide on the scheduling and subsequent steps after necessary verifications.
The motions of no confidence target the entire European Commission under von der Leyen's leadership, reflecting political dissatisfaction from both the left and right wings of the Parliament. The upcoming votes will be closely watched as a measure of confidence in the Commission's policies and leadership.
