The upside case for stability is that the market proves the current reserve level is still comfortably ample through several real-world stress tests, which would mean the Fed has more room to keep the balance sheet steady. The downside case is that repeated funding frictions force the market to price a larger liquidity premium and force the Fed back into more explicit balance-sheet management.
What should investors watch? The next H.4.1 releases, reserve balances, TGA swings, ON RRP usage, and any sustained move in repo rates relative to administered rates. Those are the markers that will show whether the reserve cushion is still comfortably wide or just wide enough on paper. If the market begins to need more frequent official support to keep short-term rates orderly, that would be the clearest sign that the constraint has shifted from cyclical noise to structural reality.
