NextFin News -- Ba Shusong, the former Managing Director and Chief China Economist of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX), has recently been unreachable.
Some sources indicate that Ba has been taken away by relevant authorities for investigation, although details regarding the case remain unknown.
Ba was appointed as Chief China Economist in April 2015, when HKEX established a Mainland Affairs Department and made several high-level personnel appointments.
Prior to his role at HKEX, Ba served as the Deputy Director of the Financial Research Institute of the State Council Development Research Center, Chief Economist of the China Banking Association, a member of the Hong Kong Economic Development Council, and a visiting scholar at Columbia Business School in the United States.
The last time Ba appeared as a senior executive of HKEX was six months ago. On October 22, 2025, during the "China Opportunity Forum" held in Shanghai, Ba still attended the meeting in his capacity as Managing Director and Chief China Economist of HKEX.
However, in March 2026, Ba's name was absent from the management list in HKEX's 2025 annual report. HKEX confirmed that Ba Shusong left the company at the end of 2025 and served as a part-time consultant before his departure.
Ba is also a doctoral supervisor at Chinese universities. Sources indicate that Ba has not spoken in group chats since mid-March. Prior to this, he frequently shared various information in his doctoral students' group. According to the official website of the HSBC Business School at Peking University, Ba is currently a professor and Executive Dean of the HSBC Financial Research Institute at Peking University.
