Founder of Fuyao Glass Calls for Specialization to Navigate Economic Downturn in China

AsianFin -- China’s current economic situation is in "autumn" rather than a "harsh winter," said Cao Dewang, a prominent Chinese entrepreneur and founder of Fuyao Glass, though he cautioned that the coming "winter" could be prolonged.

Cao made the remarks recently during a speech at a Fudan alumni event. Speaking of both internal and external issues, he emphasized the importance of courage and scientific reasoning in confronting economic difficulties.

Cao noted that internal factors, such as the overcapacity and homogeneity of manufacturing and high levels of debt among households and businesses, are compounding economic woes. Externally, the retreat of globalization and the reshoring of manufacturing to Europe and the U.S. are adding pressure.

To navigate these challenges, Cao offered three key advice. Cao stressed the importance of ensuring stable income for private enterprises. Unlike state-owned enterprises, which can focus on asset growth, private firms must prioritize revenue generation to ensure sustainability. Only by storing sufficient resources can we survive the long term, he said.

Rather than pursuing size, Cao advocated for specialization and strength. Drawing from Fuyao Glass’s history, he explained how the company once shut down unprofitable production lines, halted expansionary investments, and concentrated on its core glass business. This focused strategy enabled Fuyao to become the world’s largest automotive glass manufacturer, operating across 13 countries.

Cao encouraged businesses to confront their problems directly and adopt a forward-looking approach. "If someone at my level can lower myself to face reality, why can't ordinary people?" he said in Mandarin and as translated by AsianFin. For entrepreneurs, he stresses the need to stay sensitive to policy changes and respond promptly to remain competitive.

Cao advised entrepreneurs to approach international ventures with caution. While not discouraging overseas expansion, he said careful planning and understanding of local social structures and business logic are important.

Fuyao Glass’s success is a testament to this approach. The company established its first U.S. factory in 1994, demonstrating exceptional foresight. Cao also recommended the documentary American Factory (2019), which chronicles Fuyao’s journey in the U.S., as a valuable resource for aspiring global businesses.
