NextFin news, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced on this Wednesday in Berlin that Germany does not plan to send its troops to Ukraine. He emphasized that the deployment of German soldiers to Ukraine is excluded until a possible ceasefire is established between the conflicting parties.
Merz made these remarks during an interview with the German TV channel Sat.1, where he clarified that neither the German government nor the European Union has concrete plans to introduce troops into Ukraine at this time.
He further stated that the primary security guarantee for Ukraine currently lies in supporting the Ukrainian army in its fight against Russian aggression. The possibility of German military involvement could only be considered in the distant future, after a ceasefire or peace agreement is reached.
"Until the moment of a ceasefire, sending troops to Ukraine will definitely not happen. Even after that, I have serious doubts about Germany's participation," Merz said, adding that any such decision would require approval from the Bundestag and depend on agreements with Russia.
Merz also noted that such a step cannot be taken against Russia but only in cooperation with it, acknowledging that this process faces many obstacles and could take a long time.
This statement comes amid ongoing international discussions about security guarantees for Ukraine and the role of European countries in the conflict. On the same day, German lawmakers visited Kyiv to discuss further support for Ukraine, while the German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius criticized premature public discussions about troop deployments.
Merz's comments align with Germany's cautious approach to direct military involvement in Ukraine, focusing instead on providing military aid and diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.
