The conversational editing tool was first introduced exclusively on Google's Pixel 10 smartphones in August 2025. With this rollout, the feature is now available to a broader range of eligible Android devices in the U.S., expanding access beyond Pixel 10 owners.
Users can initiate the feature by tapping the "Help me edit" button in the photo editor. They can then describe the desired changes in plain English, such as "brighten the lighting," "sharpen the focus," or "remove the person in the background." The AI interprets these instructions and applies the edits automatically. It also supports follow-up commands for fine-tuning, like "make it warmer" or "remove the shadow in the corner."
The AI-powered editing covers common adjustments like lighting and focus, as well as advanced tasks such as removing objects, restoring old or faded photos, and even adding creative elements not originally present in the image. This approach aims to simplify photo editing by eliminating the need for users to understand complex editing tools or menus.
Alongside the conversational editing feature, Google has integrated support for C2PA Content Credentials in Google Photos. This system digitally marks images to indicate when AI has been used to create or alter them, promoting transparency about AI involvement in photo edits.
Currently, the feature is available only to users aged 18 and older, using English language settings, and limited to the U.S. Google has not announced plans for international availability or support for other languages or platforms such as iOS.
This development reflects Google's broader strategy of embedding its Gemini AI technology across its products, following earlier integrations in Search and Gmail. By bringing conversational AI editing to Google Photos, Google aims to make photo editing more accessible and intuitive for millions of users storing personal memories on the platform.
