AsianFin -- Hyundai Motor Co. has secured a stockpile of rare earth materials sufficient to last about a year, positioning the South Korean automaker to weather near-term supply disruptions stemming from China’s recent export restrictions, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The company’s preparedness was disclosed during a recent investor call, where a Hyundai investor relations official said the automaker has “far more wiggle room” than many global peers when it comes to rare earth-related supply chain risk, the person said.
China’s April move to tighten controls on rare earth and magnet exports has rattled global supply chains critical to the auto, aerospace, semiconductor, and defense sectors. Automakers such as Ford and BMW have already reported supply issues as a result.
