Japan's First "Sustainable Aviation Fuel" Production Equipment to Start Supplying in April

AsianFin -- The production equipment for "Sustainable Aviation Fuel" (SAF), which is made from used cooking oil from restaurants, has been completed, according to Kyodo News.

Cosmo Oil Company and engineering contractor JGC Holdings Corporation held a completion ceremony in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture on Thursday.

This is Japan's first large-scale production facility, which will begin supplying in April. SAF has lower actual CO₂ emissions and is expected to be a key to decarbonizing the aviation industry.

The equipment is located in Cosmo Oil's Sakai Refinery and is capable of producing 30,000 kiloliters of SAF per year. If these SAF are mixed with traditional jet fuel at a ratio of 30%, they can be used for 700 one-way flights between "Tokyo and London".

The supply targets are planned to be Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways, and the German logistics giant DHL. It is reported that compared to traditional fuels, SAF can reduce CO₂ emissions by 80% throughout the process from raw material procurement to consumption.
