AsianFin -- Li Auto, a leading Chinese electric vehicle startup, is set to become the first automaker in the world to open-source its in-vehicle operating system, marking a significant shift in the industry.
The company’s self-developed Halo OS will be gradually released in open-source communities starting late next month, Chairman and CEO Li Xiang announced at the Zhongguancun Forum Annual Conference.
The open-source module will include core components, such as a vehicle control OS, smart driving OS, communication middleware, and a virtualization platform, Li said, inviting global developers to participate in system optimization and ecosystem building.
As the automotive industry enters the AI era, Li Auto’s decision to fully open-source Halo OS aims to help automakers and suppliers save millions in licensing fees while enhancing performance and security.
By eliminating duplicated R&D investments, this move could save the auto industry between 10 billion and 20 billion yuan ($1.4 billion to $2.8 billion) annually, according to the Beijing-based company.
