The U.S. military will begin integrating Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence tool, Grok, into Pentagon networks later this month, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced on Monday.
Speaking at SpaceX headquarters in Texas, Hegseth said the rollout will bring “the world’s leading AI models” to both unclassified and classified Department of Defense systems. The integration comes amid scrutiny of Grok over controversial sexual imagery features.
Hegseth also outlined a new AI acceleration strategy at the Pentagon, aimed at promoting experimentation, reducing bureaucratic obstacles, targeting strategic investments, and demonstrating a framework to ensure U.S. dominance in military AI capabilities.
Last month, the Department of Defense selected Google’s Gemini, another AI model, to power its internal AI platform, GenAI.mil, highlighting the military’s broader push to integrate advanced AI tools across its operations.
