AsianFin -- SoftBank Group Corp. and its chip design subsidiary, Arm Holdings Plc, are considering a potential acquisition of Ampere Computing LLC, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Ampere, a semiconductor designer backed by Oracle Corp., has reportedly attracted interest from Arm as it evaluates strategic options. The discussions, which remain private, have not yet resulted in a definitive agreement, and insiders caution that the talks could still fall through. Alternatively, Ampere might find a different buyer.
Ampere specializes in designing semiconductors based on Arm’s technology. In 2021, Bloomberg News reported that Japan's SoftBank had proposed a minority investment in Ampere, valuing the company at $8 billion. However, the current valuation being discussed between SoftBank, Arm, and Ampere remains unclear.
If successful, the deal could further strengthen Arm’s position in the semiconductor market while solidifying its ties with a key player in the tech industry.
