Those figures show a network with substantial installed infrastructure and a broad geographic footprint. They also make the company’s core economics less dependent on the timing of any one rocket launch.
The second-quarter release added evidence that this core is still expanding. SpaceX said connectivity revenue grew 66% year over year and income from operations grew 79%, driven by a doubling of Starlink subscribers and momentum in enterprise and government services. The company also said it had closed cloud-services agreements representing $14.1 billion of contracted sales and had been awarded more than $6 billion in multiyear US government contracts for Starshield. The numbers show why that case is credible: second-quarter revenue rose 92% from $4.1 billion a year earlier, net loss improved from $1.0 billion to $541 million, and adjusted EBITDA rose 191% from $1.2 billion to $3.5 billion. They also show why the case remains incomplete: the company is committing capital across businesses with different maturity and return profiles.
The Counter-Thesis: Supply May Be Absorbed by Demand
The strongest case against a lasting repricing is straightforward: the lock-up release may create liquidity without creating selling pressure. Early investors and employees could view the IPO price as an entry point rather than an exit. Long-term buyers may welcome the opportunity to acquire shares that were previously unavailable. A release of 911.5 million eligible shares is a capacity test, not a predetermined outcome. If few holders sell, the technical pressure may fade quickly. Over the medium term, the decisive variables are segment economics. Investors will need to track connectivity operating income, subscription growth, capital expenditure and losses in AI and launch. The base case is that Starlink remains the cash anchor, the first unlock produces higher volatility, and the valuation settles at a lower premium until public earnings establish a clearer relationship between growth and free cash flow. The trigger is continued connectivity profitability without an equivalent acceleration in group cash burn.
The upside case requires two conditions at once: demand absorbs the unlocked supply and the company demonstrates that AI and launch spending is translating into measurable revenue or margin improvement. In that scenario, the early public-market decline would look cyclical, and the expanded float would eventually improve liquidity. Specific triggers would be another quarter of connectivity operating-income growth from the 2025 base, narrowing AI losses from the $6.355 billion 2025 figure and continued delivery against the $14.1 billion contracted-sales pipeline.
The downside case is a supply-led repricing that becomes fundamental. It would begin with broad selling after the unlock, then be reinforced by falling connectivity margins, rising capital requirements or delays that push the return on AI and launch investment further into the future. The falsifying signal for the downside case is equally concrete: if the first unlock passes with no sustained price discount and the next quarterly report shows stable or improving connectivity margins, the argument that a technical release has become a structural break loses force.
Over the long term, the structural issue is governance and capital allocation. The IPO materials describe a controlled company with a powerful founder voting position and a 366-day lock-up for Elon Musk in the roadshow materials. That structure can support a long investment horizon, but it also means public investors have limited influence over the pace and composition of spending. The valuation will ultimately depend on whether the market treats that control as an advantage for execution or a constraint on discipline.
SpaceX’s next test is thus not simply the next launch, subscriber milestone or quarterly revenue number. It is the interaction between a large newly tradable share pool and a business whose most profitable segment is funding a portfolio of more speculative ambitions. The first unlock will show who wants liquidity. The next several quarters will show whether the remaining holders were right to wait.
