Trump Says He Would Prefer Not to Impose Tariffs on China

AsianFin -- U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he would rather avoid imposing tariffs on China, despite continuing to threaten significant action against the country.

“We have one very big power over China, and that’s tariffs, and they don’t want them,” Trump said in an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, which aired Thursday. “And I’d rather not have to use it. But it’s a tremendous power over China.”

Trump has regularly used tariffs as a tool of leverage, both against allies and rivals, arguing that the additional revenue generated would help fund his domestic priorities. On his second day in office, he threatened to impose 10% tariffs on China starting February 1 in response to the influx of fentanyl into the U.S.
