TSMC's U.S. Plant Unlikely to Receive Latest Chip Technology Before Taiwan, CEO Says

AsianFin -- TSMC's new plant in the United States is unlikely to house the most advanced chip technology before its facilities in Taiwan, due to complex compliance issues, local construction regulations, and various permitting challenges, the company's CEO said.

In comments made at a National Taiwan University event on Thursday, TSMC CEO and Chairman C.C. Wei explained that building the new factory in Arizona has taken at least twice as long as it would in Taiwan, highlighting the difficulties the U.S. faces in rebuilding its domestic chip manufacturing capabilities.

"Every step requires a permit, and after the permit is approved, it takes at least twice as long as in Taiwan," Wei said. He noted that this would make it difficult for TSMC to deploy its latest chip technology in the U.S. ahead of Taiwan.

TSMC, a key supplier of advanced chips for companies like Apple and Nvidia, is investing $65 billion into three large factories in Arizona as part of its U.S. expansion.
