U.S. Beef Sales to China Plummet as Export Registrations Expire

AsianFin -- U.S. beef sales to China have sharply declined, according to U.S. government data released on Thursday, following Beijing’s decision to let export registrations for hundreds of American meat facilities expire.

Adding to the downturn, an ongoing tariff dispute has increased duties on U.S. meat and other goods bound for China, making them less appealing to Chinese buyers. The trade tensions further strain relations between the two nations, which have already hit historic lows in recent years.

Despite renewing export registrations for pork and poultry plants, China has not extended approvals for U.S. beef facilities whose registrations expired on March 16, according to traders and the U.S. Meat Export Federation.

As a result, uncertainty over clearance for delivery has made both U.S. exporters and Chinese buyers hesitant to finalize deals for American beef produced after that date, federation spokesperson Joe Schuele noted.
