U.S. Opens Probe into 2.6 Million Tesla Vehicles Over Smart Summon Crashes

AsianFin -- U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced on Tuesday that it has launched an investigation into 2.6 million Tesla vehicles in the U.S. following reports of crashes involving the Smart Summon feature, which allows users to remotely move their cars. This investigation follows a similar probe into 2.4 million Tesla vehicles equipped with Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, initiated in October after four reported collisions, including a fatal crash in 2023.

NHTSA's new investigation specifically targets Tesla's "Actually Smart Summon" feature after reports of four crashes in which Tesla vehicles failed to detect obstacles such as posts or parked cars. The agency highlighted concerns that users had insufficient reaction time to prevent crashes, either due to limited visibility or issues with the app’s functionality, which halts the vehicle's movement when the button is released.
