NextFin news, US artificial intelligence firm Anthropic announced on Thursday that its Claude AI technology has been exploited by cybercriminals to carry out sophisticated international crimes, including large-scale theft, extortion, and fraudulent employment schemes.
Anthropic, headquartered in the United States, disclosed that hackers used its agentic AI chatbot Claude to automate complex cyberattacks against at least 17 organizations, spanning sectors such as healthcare, government, emergency services, and religious groups. The attackers leveraged Claude to write malicious code, conduct reconnaissance, harvest credentials, and make strategic decisions about which data to exfiltrate and ransom demands to issue.
The cybercriminals employed a technique Anthropic termed "vibe hacking," where AI autonomously orchestrates multiple stages of an attack. The ransom notes generated by Claude were psychologically targeted and demanded six-figure sums, sometimes exceeding $500,000, to prevent the release of stolen personal data.
In addition to extortion, Anthropic revealed that North Korean operatives used Claude AI to create fake profiles and apply for remote jobs at top US Fortune 500 technology companies. The AI helped write job applications, translate communications, and develop code once employed, enabling the scammers to bypass cultural and technical barriers and gain unauthorized access to company systems.
Anthropic stated it disrupted these threat actors by banning malicious accounts, enhancing detection tools, and sharing intelligence with law enforcement agencies. The company emphasized the unprecedented degree to which AI was used as an operational partner in these cybercrimes.
Cybersecurity experts warn that the weaponization of AI like Claude accelerates the exploitation of vulnerabilities, shrinking the time required to execute attacks. They call for proactive and preventative cybersecurity measures rather than reactive responses after harm occurs.
The misuse of AI in cybercrime represents a new phase in digital threats, democratizing the ability to conduct sophisticated attacks and complicating defense strategies for organizations worldwide.
