NextFin news, On August 21, 2025, the Düsseldorf Administrative Court in Germany finalized the expulsion order against Ahmad Abdulaziz Abdullah A., known as Abu Walaa, the former leader of the Islamic State (IS) network in Germany. The court rejected his appeal against deportation, making the ruling legally binding.
Abu Walaa, born in Iraq and residing in Germany since 2001, was sentenced in 2021 to ten and a half years in prison for recruiting fighters and raising funds for IS. He was arrested in November 2016 along with associates and was described by German prosecutors as the top IS representative in Germany. His network was linked to the 2016 Berlin Christmas market attack.
In his legal challenge, Abu Walaa cited his seven children living in Germany as a reason to block deportation. However, the court prioritized national security concerns, citing a lack of credible evidence of his renunciation of extremism and a risk of reoffending after his scheduled release in 2027.
The court's spokesperson stated that although the deportation order is confirmed, a separate procedure will determine if Abu Walaa can be deported to Iraq, where he may face the death penalty. The court is awaiting the outcome of asylum proceedings, particularly considering the potential risk of capital punishment in Iraq.
This decision follows the 2021 conviction and sentencing of Abu Walaa for supporting a foreign terrorist organization. His prison term is set to end in 2027, after which deportation proceedings are expected to proceed.
