AsianFin -- Google aims to introduce commercial quantum computing applications within the next five years, countering Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s prediction that practical quantum computing is still two decades away.
Hartmut Neven, head of Google’s quantum division, said on Wednesday that the company is optimistic about delivering real-world applications that can only be achieved with quantum computers within this timeframe. Google recently unveiled its Willow quantum chip in late 2023.
The company envisions quantum computing breakthroughs in fields such as energy, materials science, and drug discovery—including the development of alternative energy sources, advanced batteries for electric vehicles, and innovative drug targets.
Earlier this year, Jensen Huang expressed skepticism about the near-term viability of quantum computing, predicting that widespread applications are still at least 20 years away.
