NextFin news, The International Cricket Council (ICC) suspended USA Cricket's membership with immediate effect on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, citing repeated breaches of its constitutional obligations and failure to implement essential governance reforms.
The decision was made following a virtual ICC Board meeting after extensive review and engagement with USA Cricket over the past year. The ICC highlighted USA Cricket's failure to conduct free and fair elections, induct independent directors, and obtain recognition as a National Governing Body (NGB) from the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC).
These governance issues were deemed critical, especially with cricket's upcoming return to the Olympic Games at Los Angeles 2028, where USA Cricket's jurisdiction is significant. The ICC described the breaches as causing reputational damage to the sport in the United States and globally.
To ensure continuity and safeguard the sport's future in the US, the ICC has appointed a Normalisation Committee led by ICC officials to manage governance and high-performance operations of USA's national teams temporarily. This intervention aims to restore proper administration and implement a restructured governance framework.
Despite the suspension, the ICC confirmed that USA's participation in international tournaments remains unaffected. The USA men's and women's teams will continue to compete, including the men's team already qualified for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. Additionally, USA's participation in the LA 2028 Olympics is assured as the host nation.
The roadmap for reinstatement includes dissolving the current USA Cricket board, conducting transparent elections, and achieving compliance with ICC governance standards. Until these conditions are met, the ICC will directly oversee USA Cricket's operations to maintain player development and high-performance programs.
The ICC termed the suspension an unfortunate but necessary step to protect the long-term interests of cricket in one of its key growth markets.
