Indonesia Says Apple Can Soon Sell iPhone 16s After Agreement on Local Manufacturing and R&D

AsianFin -- Indonesia has announced that Apple will soon be able to sell its iPhone 16 models in the country following an agreement between the two parties, which includes plans for a manufacturing plant and a research and development center.

Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita told reporters on Wednesday that Apple is set to receive a local content certificate, which is necessary for the sale of the iPhone 16 in Indonesia. However, he did not specify when the certificate will be issued.

Last year, Indonesia had blocked sales of the iPhone 16, citing that Apple had not met the required local content threshold for the device. To comply, companies must either form local partnerships or source components from within Indonesia.

Although Apple does not currently have any manufacturing facilities in Indonesia, the company has invested in the country by setting up several developer academies since 2018.

With a population of around 280 million, Indonesia is eager to attract more tech-related investment. However, analysts have raised concerns that the local content ban could undermine investor confidence and foster protectionist sentiments.
