Israel Targets Hamas Spokesperson Abu Obeida in Gaza Airstrike on Saturday

NextFin news, On Saturday, August 30, 2025, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet security service launched an airstrike in the Rimal neighborhood of Gaza City, northern Gaza Strip, targeting Abu Obeida, the spokesperson for Hamas's military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades.

The joint operation was led by the IDF's Southern Command and directed by Israeli Military Intelligence (AMAN). The Israeli military stated that the strike was aimed at a key Hamas terrorist operative and was carried out using precision munitions to minimize civilian casualties.

According to Israeli sources, this was not the first attempt to target Abu Obeida. Earlier in May 2025, the IDF assessed that Abu Obeida was in proximity to Mohammed Sinwar, the head of Hamas's military wing in Gaza, who was killed in an Israeli strike in Khan Yunis.

Hamas reported that the airstrike resulted in dozens of casualties, including fatalities and injuries, but did not confirm Abu Obeida's status. The Israeli military has not released information on whether the strike successfully eliminated the target.

The strike occurred amid heightened tensions and ongoing military operations in Gaza, with Abu Obeida having recently issued threats against Israel in response to Israeli military plans to capture Hamas's de facto capital.
