Meta to Cut About 600 AI Unit Jobs Amid Restructuring

Meta will lay off approximately 600 employees within its artificial intelligence division as part of efforts to streamline operations and reduce management layers, a spokesperson confirmed to CNBC on Wednesday.

The cuts were detailed in a memo from Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, who joined in June as part of Meta’s $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI. Affected roles span Meta’s AI infrastructure units, the Fundamental Artificial Intelligence Research (FAIR) unit, and other product-related positions.

Employees within TBD Labs, which includes many of Meta’s top-tier AI hires brought in over the summer, will not be affected, according to sources. The move highlights CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s strategic focus on retaining high-cost, high-potential talent over legacy staff.
