AsianFin -- Microsoft has called on US President Donald Trump's team to relax the export restrictions on artificial intelligence (AI) chips that were imposed in the final days of the Biden administration.
The tech giant argued that these measures unfairly impact U.S. allies, including India, Switzerland, and Israel, and hinder the ability of American tech companies to develop and expand AI data centers in these countries.
In a blog post published Thursday, Microsoft pointed out that the tightened U.S. restrictions on the export of advanced AI chips to Beijing are preventing American chipmakers and major tech firms from accessing one of the largest semiconductor markets, intensifying the global race for AI infrastructure dominance.
Nvidia, a market leader whose AI chips power applications like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, could be particularly affected by the curbs, which have already restricted most of its graphics processors from being exported to Beijing.
In the final days of the Biden administration, the U.S. government imposed additional export restrictions, dividing the world into regions to protect advanced computing power within the U.S. and block China’s access to cutting-edge technology.
