NextFin news, On August 19, 2025, Nvidia Corporation revealed it is developing a new artificial intelligence (AI) chip specifically for the Chinese market. The chip, temporarily named B30A, is based on Nvidia's latest Blackwell architecture and is designed to outperform the H20 model currently permitted for sale in China, according to multiple sources including Reuters and AInvest.
The B30A chip will feature a single-die design, which integrates all core components on one continuous silicon piece, unlike the dual-die configuration of Nvidia's flagship B300 accelerator. This design is expected to deliver about half the raw computing power of the B300 but surpass the H20's performance. It will also include high-bandwidth memory and Nvidia's NVLink interconnect technology to enable fast data transmission between processors.
Nvidia plans to deliver samples of the B30A chip to Chinese customers as early as September 2025 for testing purposes. In addition, Nvidia is preparing to ship another Blackwell-based chip called the RTX6000D to China, which is designed mainly for AI inference tasks. The RTX6000D will have lower performance than the H20 but will be priced accordingly and comply with U.S. government export restrictions by using conventional GDDR memory with bandwidth just below the 1.4 terabyte-per-second limit.
China accounted for approximately 13% of Nvidia's revenue in the last fiscal year, making it a significant market for the company. However, Chinese regulators have recently pushed state-owned and private companies to adopt domestic AI chip alternatives for projects related to national security, criticizing the H20 chip's security status. Chinese state media have also publicly criticized the H20 chip, citing concerns over its security and advancement.
Amid escalating U.S.-China tensions, the U.S. government has reportedly embedded tracking devices in certain high-end chips at risk of being smuggled into China, further intensifying Beijing's security concerns. This development has forced Nvidia to revise its 2025 sales forecasts for the Chinese market, where it had anticipated selling around 1.5 million H20 chips, generating approximately $23 billion in revenue.
Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang has emphasized the importance of the Chinese market to the company, and the launch of the B30A chip may be a strategic move to regain market share amid regulatory and geopolitical challenges. The company aims to balance compliance with U.S. export controls while meeting demand in China through these new AI chip offerings.
