OpenAI and Microsoft are facing a U.S. lawsuit that alleges the companies’ AI chatbot, ChatGPT, “exacerbated a user’s delusions” and played a role in a murder, marking the first case in the United States to directly connect an AI chat tool with a killing.
Court documents filed in San Francisco Superior Court state that during interactions with ChatGPT, a 56-year-old man from Connecticut experienced amplified and reinforced paranoid delusions, which allegedly contributed to him killing his 83-year-old mother in August before taking his own life.
The lawsuit notes the man had a long history of mental health issues and had frequent interactions with ChatGPT prior to the incident. It alleges the AI failed to correct his delusional thoughts or guide him toward professional mental health support, instead providing responses that reinforced his misconceptions, ultimately contributing to the tragedy.
