NextFin news, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas declared on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, that Hamas will have no role in the future governance of Palestine. Speaking via video link at the United Nations General Assembly, Abbas outlined his vision for a unified Palestinian state governed by a single legitimate authority.
Due to the United States not issuing him a visa for personal attendance, Abbas addressed the assembly remotely. He emphasized that Hamas and other armed groups must surrender their weapons to the Palestinian Authority to achieve complete demilitarization.
"Hamas will have no role in governance. Hamas and other groups must surrender their weapons to the Palestinian Authority," Abbas stated in his speech.
He further called for a single, united Palestinian state governed by one law and secured by one legitimate security force. Abbas condemned the crimes of the Israeli occupation as well as the killings and detentions of civilians, including actions taken by Hamas on October 7, 2023.
Abbas also promised reforms and democratic elections within one year after the establishment of a ceasefire. He noted that these elections would be held under international supervision to ensure transparency and legitimacy.
This announcement comes amid growing international recognition of Palestinian statehood. Countries including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Monaco, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Malta have officially recognized Palestine in recent weeks, emphasizing support for a two-state solution and the exclusion of Hamas from future governance.
The UK government, for example, stated that Hamas is a brutal terrorist organization opposed to peace and that it must release hostages, accept disarmament, and relinquish control over Gaza. The UK and its allies have called for an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian aid access to Gaza.
Abbas's speech at the UN General Assembly reflects ongoing efforts by the Palestinian Authority to consolidate governance and security under its control, distancing itself from Hamas's armed activities and political influence.
