NextFin news, US-based Khalistani separatist group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) has threatened to "siege" the Indian Consulate in Vancouver, Canada, on Thursday, September 18, 2025, coinciding with the resumption of diplomatic relations between New Delhi and Ottawa.
The group announced plans to "take over" the consulate and circulated a poster targeting India's new High Commissioner to Canada, Dinish Patnaik, with a target symbol on his face. SFJ urged Indo-Canadians to stay away from the consulate premises during the planned action.
SFJ justified the threat by citing Canadian political developments, including a statement made by former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Parliament on September 18, 2023, alleging Indian agents' involvement in the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a National Investigation Agency (NIA)-designated terrorist. The group claimed Indian consulates continue to operate spy networks and surveil Khalistan referendum campaigners in Canada.
The group also highlighted that Inderjeet Singh Gosal, who took over the Khalistan referendum campaign leadership after Nijjar's killing, is under witness protection by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) due to the grave threat environment.
SFJ described the planned siege as a demand for accountability against what it called "espionage and intimidation on Canadian soil."
This threat comes shortly after a Canadian government report acknowledged the active presence of Khalistani terror groups within Canada.
Diplomatic relations between India and Canada had been strained since June 2023, following Trudeau's allegations against Indian agents in Nijjar's assassination outside a gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia. India rejected these claims as "absurd" and accused Canada of ignoring extremist elements operating on its soil.
Relations began to thaw recently, with both countries appointing new high commissioners after an understanding was reached during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the G7 summit in June 2025.
The Indian Consulate in Vancouver is located in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, where the planned siege is to take place.
