Trump Announces 25% Tariffs on Imported Medium and Heavy-Duty Trucks Starting November 1, 2025

NextFin news, On Monday, October 6, 2025, US President Donald Trump declared that starting November 1, 2025, a 25% tariff will be imposed on all medium and heavy-duty trucks imported into the United States from other countries.

Trump made the announcement via a post on his social media platform, stating, "Beginning November 1st, 2025, all Medium and Heavy Duty Trucks coming into the United States from other Countries will be Tariffed at the Rate of 25%. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"

This announcement marks a one-month delay from the initially threatened October 1 start date. The tariff is part of the Trump administration's broader protectionist trade policy, aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing and reducing reliance on imports.

The tariffs stem from a Section 232 investigation launched earlier in 2025, which examined the impact of truck imports on US national security. This legal framework has been used by the administration to justify tariffs on various imported goods.

The new tariff is expected to significantly affect international truck manufacturers and cross-border trade, especially with Canada and Mexico, which together account for approximately 93% of US heavy truck imports. Economists have highlighted uncertainty regarding exemptions for trucks manufactured in Mexico and Canada under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which could influence the tariff's impact.

Analysts Neil Shearing and Stephen Brown from Capital Economics noted, "The US sources 78 percent of heavy truck imports from Mexico and 15 percent from Canada. A key question is whether there will be exemptions for USMCA-compliant products. If there's no USMCA exemption, then Mexico will be most heavily affected by the large truck tariffs."

Trump has previously used similar trade measures to impose tariffs on steel, aluminum, and other goods, citing national security and economic protectionism. The current truck tariff is viewed as having a stronger legal basis compared to some other tariffs, which have faced legal challenges.

The tariff announcement comes amid ongoing trade tensions and efforts by the Trump administration to reshape US trade policy. The impact on the trucking industry, supply chains, and international relations remains to be closely monitored as the November 1 implementation date approaches.
