UK Considers Scrapping Visa Fees to Attract Top Global Talent

NextFin news, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is exploring proposals to eliminate visa fees for top global talent, including elite scientists, academics, and digital experts, as of Monday, September 22, 2025, in the United Kingdom. This initiative aims to stimulate economic growth by attracting the world's best professionals.

The plan, reported by the Financial Times and confirmed by sources within Number 10 Downing Street and the Treasury, targets applicants affiliated with the world's top five universities or holders of prestigious awards. Currently, the UK's global talent visa application fee is £766 (approximately $1,030), with the same fee applied to partners and children.

Starmer's "global talent task force," chaired by his business adviser Varun Chandra and science minister Lord Patrick Vallance, is developing ideas to reform the high-end visa system. The task force is considering cutting visa costs to zero for distinguished individuals to enhance the UK's competitiveness in attracting global talent.

This move comes in response to the United States' recent decision, effective Sunday, September 21, 2025, to impose a $100,000 fee for new H-1B visas, widely used by US tech companies. UK officials view the US policy as an opportunity to position Britain as a more attractive destination for top professionals.

The UK government aims to implement these reforms ahead of the upcoming Budget announcement scheduled for November 26, 2025. Neither the Treasury nor Downing Street has issued formal comments on the proposals as of Monday.

The global talent visa, introduced in 2020, is designed for leaders or potential leaders in fields such as science, engineering, humanities, medicine, digital technology, and the arts. In the year ending June 2023, the number of global talent visas granted increased by 76 percent, reaching 3,901.

The proposed abolition of visa fees is part of a broader strategy to attract the brightest minds worldwide, contrasting with the US's tightening immigration stance, and to accelerate economic growth in the UK.
