Ukraine Secures Over $2 Billion from European Allies to Purchase US Weapons

NextFin news, Kyiv, Monday — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Monday that Ukraine has successfully mobilized over $2 billion from various European countries to purchase weapons from the United States, aiming to bolster the Ukrainian armed forces amid the ongoing war with Russia.

In his address to the nation, Zelensky specified that the funds have been raised through contributions from countries including the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Canada, Belgium, and Latvia. The financial support is part of the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) program, which facilitates the acquisition of US military equipment by Ukraine through European partners.

Zelensky stated, "Our goal is to raise no less than $1 billion per month for this program," emphasizing the ongoing commitment to sustain Ukraine's defense capabilities. The funds will be used to procure advanced weaponry such as Patriot air defense missile systems and HIMARS rocket launchers, among other military technologies.

On August 30, the US State Department approved a $179.1 million package for the maintenance and support of Patriot air defense systems currently operated by Ukraine. This package includes spare parts, software updates, system modifications, and technical assistance, according to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA).

Additionally, the US approved the sale of Patriot missile systems to Denmark valued at $8.5 billion. Denmark, which does not have its own Patriot systems, plans to purchase them from the US and subsequently transfer them to Ukraine to enhance its air defense capabilities.

Furthermore, the US has authorized satellite communication services worth $150 million to support Ukraine's military communications infrastructure.

These developments come as the US administration under President Donald Trump has shifted from providing free military aid to Ukraine to a model where European allies finance the procurement of US weapons for Kyiv. This approach encourages greater European involvement in supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression.

President Zelensky also highlighted ongoing discussions with US officials and European partners about security guarantees and joint defense initiatives, underscoring the strategic cooperation aimed at countering the Russian military threat.
