A vehicle produced by Xiaomi Auto, the electric vehicle arm of Chinese technology giant Xiaomi, struck an employee at one of the company’s own delivery centers on Tuesday, though no casualties have been reported.
The incident occurred at Xiaomi Auto’s Xiasha delivery center in Hangzhou, eastern China, when the owner of a newly delivered Xiaomi YU7, a luxury crossover sport utility vehicle, accidentally reversed into a staff member, according to a source close to the Beijing-based company. The vehicle was not operating in self-driving mode at the time of the accident.
Chinese media outlet The Paper reported that the driver mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake while reversing.
Hangzhou traffic police confirmed to Yicai that a traffic accident involving a vehicle did take place at the delivery center. However, they declined to disclose further details, citing the ongoing investigation, and did not comment on the condition of the injured employee.
The Xiasha delivery center, located in Mengma Auto Town in Hangzhou’s Qiantang district, opened in March last year. It is the district’s first headquarters dedicated to new energy vehicle sales, integrating vehicle delivery, after-sales services and maintenance functions.
The incident comes amid heightened public scrutiny of vehicle safety following a fatal accident involving a Xiaomi SU7 Ultra in Chengdu in October. In that case, the high-performance luxury sedan caught fire after a collision, and rescuers were reportedly unable to open the vehicle’s doors in time, resulting in the driver’s death.
