Zelenskyy Says Final Peace Treaty Ending War May Not Materialize

NextFin news, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Friday, September 19, 2025, in Kyiv that a final peace treaty to formally end the ongoing war with Russia may not materialize. He highlighted the necessity of security guarantees for Ukraine before the conflict concludes.

Speaking to journalists, Zelenskyy rejected the idea of adopting a Korean, Finnish, or any other historical model to resolve the war. He explained that Ukraine's situation differs significantly from the Korean conflict, where the war ended without a formal peace treaty. "It may happen that there will be no final document to end the war," Zelenskyy said.

The president referenced French President Emmanuel Macron's view that security guarantees should not be delayed until the war's end. Zelenskyy agreed, stating that even a ceasefire could suffice to provide such guarantees. He stressed that Ukraine cannot afford to wait for a formal peace agreement and needs security assurances immediately to prevent further aggression.

Zelenskyy also noted that Ukraine knows which security guarantees are essential to prevent renewed Russian aggression. He warned that any new attempts by Russia to attack would be met with real resistance.

Regarding the prospects for ending the war, Zelenskyy said no one currently knows the ultimate outcome, but Ukraine is clear on the first steps needed. He dismissed speculation about applying models from other conflicts, emphasizing the unique circumstances of Ukraine's war.

These remarks come amid ongoing hostilities and international discussions about Ukraine's security and the conflict's resolution. Zelenskyy's statements underline the complexity and uncertainty surrounding the war's end and the importance of immediate security measures.
